reaction of sugar beet cultivars to cercospora beticola isolates

چکیده

twenty four isolates of cercospora beticola were collected from khuzestan, ardebil, golestan and mazandaran provinces and purified, and one isolate was used to represent each province. after optimization of spore production on different media, pathogenic variability of selected isolates on five sugar beet varieties with different levels of resistance was studied under green house condition. four month-old plants were inoculated by the pathogen on each plant, four mature leaves were tagged and each leaf was inoculated with one isolate. spore concentration was adjusted to 3 ×10 4 conidia/ml. the experiment was carried out on the basis of factorial random design with four replications (eight plants per replication). disease severity and incubation period were measured as investigated characters. the results showed that there was a significant difference among cultivars for both characteristics. puma and 191 were the most resistant and susceptible cultivars respectively. cercospora isolates had significant differences for disease severity and were categorized in two groups, while there was no difference for incubation period among the isolates. isolate×cultivar interaction led to no significant differences for both characters. it seems that reaction of cultivars to isolates is not different and in spite of variability among isolates of c. beticola, resistance in sugar beet to the fungus was effective against all iranian isolates.

Fluctuations in number of Cercospora beticola conidia in relationship to environment and disease severity in sugar beet.

Cercospora leaf spot, caused by Cercospora beticola, is the most damaging foliar disease of sugar beet in Minnesota (MN) and North Dakota (ND). Research was conducted to characterize the temporal progression of aerial concentration of C. beticola conidia in association with the environment and disease severity in sugar beet. In 2003 and 2004, volumetric spore traps were placed within inoculated...

Characterization of CbCyp51 from field isolates of Cercospora beticola.

The hemibiotrophic fungus Cercospora beticola causes leaf spot of sugar beet. Leaf spot control measures include the application of sterol demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides. However, reduced sensitivity to DMIs has been reported recently in the Red River Valley sugar beet-growing region of North Dakota and Minnesota. Here, we report the cloning and molecular characterization of CbCyp51, ...

Morphological and Genetic Diversity of Cercospora beticola Isolates

The fungus Cercospora beticola Sacc. is the one of the most important pathogens on the sugar beet. This plant pathogen causes cercospora leaf spot disease which is a serious economic problem for growers of this crop all over the world. Traditionally, the identification of C. beticola is based mainly on conidial characters and host association, but today molecular characterization is necessary f...

Non-invasive Presymptomatic Detection of Cercospora beticola Infection and Identification of Early Metabolic Responses in Sugar Beet

Cercospora beticola is an economically significant fungal pathogen of sugar beet, and is the causative pathogen of Cercospora leaf spot. Selected host genotypes with contrasting degree of susceptibility to the disease have been exploited to characterize the patterns of metabolite responses to fungal infection, and to devise a pre-symptomatic, non-invasive method of detecting the presence of the...

Magnetic resonance imaging of sugar beet taproots in soil reveals growth reduction and morphological changes during foliar Cercospora beticola infestation

Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) infection can cause severe yield loss in sugar beet. Introduction of Cercospora-resistant varieties in breeding programmes is important for plant protection to reduce both fungicide applications and the risk of the development of fungal resistance. However, in vivo monitoring of the sugar-containing taproots at early stages of foliar symptoms and the characterization ...
